Extreme cold temperatures forecast for this weekend brings the possibility of water freezing in pipes for Scottsdale residents, especially large properties in open areas and located north of Shea Boulevard. Scottsdale’s Water Resources Division is offering the following tips to help keep your pipes from freezing overnight:
- Check outside your house for any exposed pipes and protect them with some type of temporary insulation (a blanket, small rug, etc.)
- Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water pipes in the garage
- If weather is very cold outside, consider letting the cold water drip from the faucet serviced by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe – even a trickle – will help prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the running water is above freezing.
- Check the hose faucet located where water comes into your house and if no water comes out, it’s likely that your pipes are frozen.
- Check with a neighbor to see if water comes out of their hose faucet.
- If your pipes are frozen and they are located in an area where the sun will hit they will most likely thaw by mid morning.
- If your pipes are frozen and are located in an area that is shaded they will most likely thaw after midday.
